The Co-op Voice was born out of a desire to create a space where members could communicate directly with each other and with the greater Co-op community. For decades The Coop Scoop was created and managed by members. It, like many things in the HWFC universe, has evolved significantly over the years. In its current iteration it is produced under the direction of the staff. It is colorfully designed and often filled with wonderful member-written articles. However, it isn’t the vehicle for communication among members that it once was. The Coop Scoop fulfills a very different function now that mainly serves to market HWFC as a mission driven place to shop. While the Coop Scoop is a lively tool to support the Profit component of our triple bottom line of People, Planet, Profit, we felt that something was missing.
It is to that end that a group of member-owners approached the Board to propose a membership newsletter to revive — and expand — the original intention of that xeroxed hand-fashioned publication. After fulfilling requests for clarification of the proposed project, the newsletter was approved by the Honest Weight Board in January of 2016. A year and eight issues later, the Co-op Voice Team includes Editors, Copy-Editors, Web Designers, Web Content Managers, Voice Writers, and an Advertising Team.
We feel that the Co-op Voice has a specific niche to fill. We seek to honor and acknowledge a diversity of voices. It is not our intention to stoke partisanship, though some may feel that the very nature of this project is such. In good faith we will consistently endeavor to represent differing opinions on our beautiful cooperative. Since getting Board approval we have been working steadily. We encourage the HWFC community to engage with the Voice via writing letters to the editor, proposing items and articles, suggesting topics to cover, joining the work team and, above all, by reading it.
