The Homeless and Travelers Aid Society (HATAS) has been meeting our community’s need for shelter, food, clothing and affordable housing since 1924. For the past 11 years HATAS has put on an annual gingered house building competition and fundraiser known as (respectively) “Home Sweet Gingerbread Home” and “Evening in Winter Wonderland”.

Every year since moving to 100 Watervliet, Honest Weight staff and members have teamed up to put together an entry in the contest. This has been a great opportunity for us to come together and work on a fun and creative project with food while helping those less fortunate in our community. Our team has had a different mix of people contributing their time, energy, skills and ideas; once even taking home 1st place! It has been a great way to meet others in the Honest Weight community while helping our neighbors in need.

This year we are looking forward to doing it again. Our process has been to solicit volunteers for the project, gather and brainstorm ideas, pick a theme, then lay out a timeline for completion. If you’re interested, you simply need a desire to work with other members of the Honest Weight community for a good cause. Contact Janet Sorell, Member Services Coordinator (memberservices AT honestweight.coop) by September 25th to volunteer. Our creation will need to be completed before November 5th.

Home Sweet Gingerbread Home is taking place on Saturday November 5th, 2016 from 10am-5pm in front of the Apple Store at Crossgates Mall (right across from Lord & Taylor). Competitors from across the Capital Region will compete for top prizes. All entries must be 100% edible, transportable, and fit on a 14” by 18” inch foundation. Two categories ensure that professionals don’t compete with novices and prizes are awarded within both categories.

Evening in Winter Wonderland is on Thursday November 17th, 2016 from 6-8pm. HATAS will announce contest winners and honor the 2016 Champions in Compassion: Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple and TD Bank. This fun, low-key event provides heavy appetizers from Mazzone Catering and a short program. This year, HATAS is celebrating at 90 State Street Special Events located in Albany, NY 12207. Valet parking included.
