Dear Co-op Voice Readers,

As the days grow shorter and our country contemplates a new era, we at the Co-op Voice are increasingly grateful for the Honest Weight community. While we will never all agree on everything, nor would that be ideal, we hold dear the values we do share: participating with others to speak out about and support the causes we feel deeply about, welcoming diversity, and giving back to our local community, not to mention providing delicious and nutritious food.

We join the rest of the country in absorbing the startling events of the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and election. At all points on the political spectrum, it’s a time of upheaval and uncertainty.

Our Co-op offers a refuge and some solutions. Taking good care of oneself and loved ones, connecting with others, and working to improve things are tested ways of weathering uncertainty and coping. The stress that change causes can be channeled productively, especially in community with others. The means for all these avenues of healing can be found here at Honest Weight.

Take solace in the simple comfort of coming together at the Co-op. The colorful arrays of produce greet you at the entrance, welcoming staff and member-owners offer smiles and answer questions cheerfully, while you shop, spot some people you know and chat.

The Co-op community welcomes all. Fellow Co-op members are more likely than the general public to speak out about injustice, to take action against it, and to be quick to protect the vulnerable. In our view, this may be the most noteworthy ‘silver lining’ and antidote to despair at present. As David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker, wrote just after the election: “despair is no answer. To combat authoritarianism, to call out lies, to struggle honorably and fiercely in the name of American ideals—that is what is left to do.”

We’re grateful for all that the Co-op community provides to enable us to engage in that struggle, and we are grateful to you, our Co-op Voice readers.

Sincerely,
Co-op Voice Editors

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
